Navigating slips, trips and falls in the UK military

Life in the military involves demanding physical activities in a range of environments and there are hazards even with everyday tasks, highlighted by a case we recently settled for a sailor who sustained life changing injuries after a fall.

The Royal Navy serviceman tripped and fell into the safety net due to faulty lighting in the hanger he was working in. The fracture to his foot led to multiple surgeries and he was unable to fulfil his duties.

He was offered a sedentary (desk) role, however due to the ongoing pain, he was subsequently medically discharged from the Navy.

Those serving in the military, including the Royal Navy, are working in a demanding environment on naval bases and vessels which present unique challenges. Even seemingly routine areas like hangers can pose significant risks when the slightest issue like a faulty light can cause safety concerns.

Hangers with their complex equipment and ongoing maintenance can present numerous trip hazards. The importance of installing safety netting is paramount as otherwise it could lead to devastating consequences. Regular maintenance and thorough inspections are vital to ensure the safety systems are functioning correctly.

Whilst various policies and procedures are in place to protect service personnel taking part in training and completing tasks, accidents can and do happen. This case is one of many where significant injuries impacted a service member’s career and well-being.

Bolt Burdon Kemp has specialist military knowledge and has successfully represented service personnel who have sustained injuries on training exercises and deployment. If you have experienced a similar incident or have concerns about safety during military training or deployments, you may be eligible for a claim in negligence.

In addition, service personnel may also be eligible for compensation through the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS).
